Purpose: Stretton Climate Care, a small community based charity in South Shropshire, raises awareness of issues relating to Climate Change and energy saving. We provide a free household energy audit service for anyone living in the Strettons area. We work with local schools and have taken the message of energy saving and efficiency out to many local community groups, including town and parish councils, youth groups, village hall committees and WIs.

Achievements: Our volunteers, who last year clocked up over 3,000 hours working for the charity, are currently re-calculating the carbon emissions and energy savings of our first 100 clients (to date we have visited almost 300 homes). We have recently begun an energy audit advice service for local businesses and are looking to provide more targeted support to those living in fuel poverty. With encouragement from the group, Church Stretton Town Council has pledged to reduce emissions by 10 per cent.

Each year members open up their homes so others can see how effective energy saving measures can be in reducing carbon emissions and cutting energy bills. This years Low Carbon Homes Open Day took place on Saturday 21st August when seven homes were opened to the public to share learning and ideas. Visitors were very appreciative of this opportunity and some came from as far afield as Cheshire and Liverpool.

Information: Believing firmly that community action can lead the way in carbon reduction, Stretton Climate Care has developed a starter pack for new community groups, containing all the information they need to begin their own carbon reduction journey, and is now training other new groups and providing on-going advice.

The group runs a lively website which is regularly updated with local, national and international climate change information and challenging articles.

Members: None of this could have been achieved without a very dedicated team of volunteers who are determined to help the Strettons to become a low carbon and energy efficient community.

Come along: The next event planned is the AGM on Wednesday, November 3 at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Chris Endicott of Gfleet Services, speaking on the challenging subject of Peak oil what next?. Gfleet Services Ltd. is based in Shrewsbury and works with organisations wishing to reduce the environmental, social and financial cost of transport. The venue is St Laurences Parish Centre, Church Stretton and refreshments will be served. All are welcome.
