A murder mystery evening inspired by Downton Abbey to be launched in Shropshire this November
Helen Porter of Baschurch in Shropshire has taken her passion for Downton Abbey to new heights, turning it into a thriving business.
Six years ago, she and her 18-year-old daughter set up ‘P&P Tours’ from home, with the idea of sharing their love of bonnet dramas with the world. Her Shropshire company has been bringing people from as far afield as Chile and New Zealand to join her film location tours, so Downton Abbey’s rise in popularity seemed perfect to capitalise upon.
The launch of series four of Downton Abbey coincided with the 2013 touring season coming to a close.
Helen said: “Winter was approaching and I was feeling a bit fed up, and I suddenly thought ‘maybe people would enjoy a Downton inspired event while the tours to the actual film locations are impossible’. I’ve always enjoyed Murder Mystery evenings myself, and I imagined what might happen if Earl Grantham’s near neighbours joined the Downton family for dinner, and news came in of a mystery death.’
The themed event will be held at Albrighton Hall Hotel, with Sales Office Manager Nicky Shore as host. She said: “There are limited numbers, but this is going to be a very popular night. We are excited to be hosting this event which will be the first of its kind.”
Porter said: “Up to sixteen guests will join us in the style of their favourite actor from the series, or as a suspect, and our very own Inspector will get to the bottom of the mystery, while guests wine and dine in style. We’ve arranged for guests to be able to hire authentic costumes, or they can come in their own outfit. Everybody who loves the series will enjoy quoting Maggie Smith and hearing about the antics that have been going on so close to Downton. Although we’re the first, I’m sure these events will catch on!”
Tickets are available from Albrighton Hall or from P&P Tours and the event begins on 7.30pm on Saturday November 23.
