A change of scenery

Antonia Ash meets GP turned professional photographer Peter Barritt

After 29 years of working as a GP in Bayston Hill near Shrewsbury, and at the age of 57 Peter Barritt has decided to surrender to the call of a new career as a travel photographer.

Peter who lives with his wife Janice in Porthill, Shrewsbury, has been a keen photographer since his student days. While studying medicine I went travelling around Africa, and the hobby developed from there, he says.

Since then, Peter has travelled the world taking pictures during holidays from his day job.

I started selling some of the photos I had accumulated from my travels about five years ago, and following that I made the decision to take an early retirement which has given me the freedom to focus on the profession and travel around the world.

Last year Peter travelled to Antarctica for a month to photograph the landscape and wildlife. He frequently travels with his son Benjamin; later this year they will white-water raft down one of the remotest rivers in Nepal. Peter's portfolio includes photography from India, Africa, North America and Europe as well as shots of Shropshire and elsewhere in the UK.

My career now involves travelling around the world, studying beautiful architecture and natural scenery; every day is rewarding, he says.
