A rising star - young apprentice Joe Price

A young carpenter is making his mark on the world stage, showing there is ambition aplenty among Shropshire's young craftsmen

Joe Price, who has just completed an apprenticeship with Shrewsbury firm JR Slee Building & Joinery, recently represented the UK in the world carpentry skills championships, coming fifth overall.


He is described by his boss, Raymond Slee, as a wonderful ambassador for the company and for the apprenticeship initiative and is a perfect figurehead to launch our new ShropshiresRising Stars feature.

Your hometown:Great Bolas, Telford


Your field of expertise: Carpentry, both on site and at world competition level.


Your greatest achievements so far: Represented UK in the 2011 world skills competition, coming fifth; completing NVQ Level 1, 2 and 3 in carpentry, each with distinction.


How did your interest in carpentry develop? I have always had a passion for creating things and at school enjoyed woodwork and made wooden furniture in my spare time.


Who or what has inspired you success?All the way through my apprenticeship and start of my career in carpentry my college (Shrewsbury) and employer JR Slee Building and Joinery Contractors Ltd have been with me all the way. They both have inspired me to take on the challenges that are thrown at me and do my best.


What is your long term ambition? I would like to go on to complete my foundation degree in construction and continue to use my much loved practical skills as a carpenter. I would like to be happy and successful in whatever I decide to do.


What help do you require to reach your goal?The support I have already received from my college and employer have been amazing and I am sure they will guide me and help me how ever they can in my career.
